What So Far Gone Is About

Rhys Kinnick is a retired journalist who fled to a remote cabin in rural Washington years earlier, after a Thanksgiving-dinner fistfight with his son-in-law Shane over Shane’s ties to a far-right religious militia. His off-grid peace ends the day his estranged grandchildren show up at his door with a note from their fleeing mother — and shatters completely when the children are taken by members of Shane’s group. Kinnick is forced back into a world he walked away from, teaming up with an old newsroom flame and a retired detective for a chaotic, cross-state rescue mission through the Pacific Northwest.

Reviewers have called the novel a witty, propulsive caper that doubles as a serious look at family and political division in modern America — sharp enough to read in a couple of sittings, but with real emotional stakes underneath the humor. The Seattle Times placed it alongside Walter’s Edgar Award-winning Citizen Vince in his body of work, and it picked up a starred review from Kirkus along with Publishers Weekly and Library Journal.

The Netflix Series Is Coming

Netflix gave So Far Gone by Jess Walter a straight-to-series order in December 2025 after a competitive bidding process. Mark Bomback — the writer of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and creator of Apple TV+’s Defending Jacob — is attached as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, alongside Tomorrow Studios and Story Syndicate. Jess Walter will executive produce alongside them. As of this writing, Netflix has not announced a cast or release date, so the best way to stay ahead of the adaptation is to read the book first.
